About

What is a welcoming and inclusive community?

A welcoming and inclusive community is one where its citizens and members feel safe, respected and comfortable being themselves and expressing all aspects of their identities.  It is a place where each person shares a sense of belonging with its other members.  It is home.

Background:

We Are Neighbours is a campaign that was born from individuals and organizations across Leeds and Grenville who wanted to recognize the diversity of people living in their communities and creating a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all.  Connecting through the sharing of stories and photos was identified as an interesting and engaging way to do this, and for the past three years, the St. Lawrence – Rideau Immigration Partnership has been leading the We Are Neighbours campaign.

Since 2017, 74 people from 25 different countries have contributed their stories about moving to and living in Leeds and Grenville.  Stories of hardship, love, humour, food and joy have been shared throughout Leeds and Grenville, helping people learn about their neighbours.  2019’s theme was food, and the wide variety of recipes and stories shared demonstrate how important it is to one’s identity, culture, and memories.

As We Are Neighbours moves forward, it is hoped that Leeds and Grenville residents will continue to find pride and excitement in the diversity of people, experiences, skills and lifestyles that exist locally.  Diversity has long been a Canadian strength – culturally, socially, politically and economically.  It is also a Leeds and Grenville strength.
